EMIGRANTS' Page

The catastrophic living conditions resulting from the commencement of the industrial revolution led to the Weberaufstand 1844 in Silesia. Due to the introduction of mechanical looms in factories in Chemnitz, the outwork of thousands of weavers became unprofitable. At the same time foreign competition resulted in lower salaries, so that the income of the outworkers sank far below the level of sustenance. Even in Bodenburg, a number of citizens, who besides from very limited agriculture, lived from trade and outwork, suffered bitter poverty as a result of this development.

In addition to the growing pressure of the rulers, in the years following 1844 all of Europe was suffering from crop failures, leading to an enormous increase in the prices of food. The crisis of overproduction, resulting from inexperience and failing insight of the manufacturers, led to a rapid devaluation of the citizens' currency.

The rural population had nothing to harvest and the urban population had nothing to buy. In the years starting from about 1834 the so-called "Verkoppelung", the merger of widely spread estates, began. Its goal was to simplify farming, but it also resulted in the loss of fallow land, the grassy slopes of ditches roads that the poor used for grazing their goats, "the cows of the poor men". They lost part of their sustenance. It's therefore not surprising that a wave of emigration took place at that time (about 1849 to 1864).

There was a great famine. Typhoid and cholera spread over many parts of Europe. In March 1848 there were riots against the rulers in the area around Bodenburg. Windows were smashed and guns were fired. Troops were assembled and the bourgeois formed militias against the poor rioters.

Many of the poorer people were completely disillusioned by the defeat of the revolution. The discouragement and the lack of hope for a change for the better led to the dream of a free life in America. A wave of emigration started depopulating whole villages. Especially those villages inhabited by so called dependants lost their best workers. In addition, the younger brothers of the heirs to the farm and the poor journeymen who were not able to become masters of their trade joined the exodus. These workers, farm-laborers and journeymen had nothing to lose, except for their lives, but everything to win. Those who were young and strong had the best chances to make a new life for themselves in America.

As to Bodenburg, it suffered a new catastrophe in 1851.Bodenburg had been part of the Braunschweig territory for centuries but as an enclave surrounded by land of the Kingdom of Hannover. On January 1st, 1851 Braunschweig joined the "Preußischer Zollverein" (The Preussian customs union). Thus, Bodenburg was a like a foreign country within the Kingdom of Hannover and subsequently was to be starved out by the surrounding areas.

Until December 1st, 1852 customs officers lay in wait for smugglers around Bodenburg. But even in 1860 the people in Bodenburg had to pay high customs fees and buy expensive trading licenses in order to be able to trade with the surrounding territories of Hannover.

The following list of emigrants of the exclaves Bodenburg and Oestrum ( Gruhne ) plus the documents of the Staatsarchiv Wolfenbüttel (StA WF 129 Neu 11 Nr. 9Bd. 3 / Entlassung aus dem Unterthanen-Verbande) might be of interest to genealogists.
